Officially founded on October 31, 2005, what is now Camp Hawkeye has lived in the mind of a small group of people for the better part of eight years. What began as late night and Rest Hour conversations in 1999 has blossomed into a hugely successful and devoted community.  Hawkeye's first four summers have been characterized by tremendous creativity and discovery.  Having grown more than two hundred percent since 2005 the program continues to progress and improve.

Summer 2009 was another adventure.  The unique Hawkeye community saw further tribe and Bumppo action.  Capture the Flag remains king but swimming to turtle rock and sleeping out on the island are quickly gaining ground (maybe it's because of the S'mores)!  A quick summary of programmatic highlights from this past summer:

  • The counselors ended with the Bumppo Stick for the third time ('06, '07, and '09)
  • The Huron Tribe won this year's tribe contest...their second time ('08-A)

Thanks to each and every family for their trust in the staff and their belief in the program. Each participant and family member is a pioneer developing a new way of making connections across the social boundaries that usually separate us. The equation is working and Hawkeye will continue to bring very different people to camp to live, work, and play together.  Take some time to consider the positive implications of our sons and daughters making friends with campers and staff from different places and backgrounds from their own.  It is truly powerful and I won't bother to ask because I know that you will...
