This Area is central to the daily and weekly programming at camp. There are two things that all campers must do at Hawkeye and participating in weekly hiking or canoeing trips is one of them. Each week each camper goes on an out of camp Wilderness Adventure trip lasting one to three days. These trips are into the surrounding mountains and onto surrounding rivers and lakes.  Over the course of the session these trips increase in length and complexity requiring an increased variety and depth of understanding of skills practiced. The final week of camp will include an overnight experience for every camper.

Each camper will participate in these trips in two different groups over their two, four, or eight week session. Trips are conducted with cabin group, which may include a variety of ability levels, as well as with an ability specific group. Participation in these two groups allows for a range of experience for all campers.  Prior to participation in these trips each group will spends time learning & practicing expeditions skills during Activity Periods. These activities may account for as much as three or four hours of skills-based learning before each trip. Skills practiced here may include compass work, fire building, shelter building, trail & water safety, canoe basics, portaging, group decision making and leadership skills.
