Frequently Asked Questions

Q- How old do you have to be?

  • All full staff members must be at least eighteen (18) before the first day of Staff Orientation.  There are a few Junior Counselor roles available each summer for seventeen (17) year olds but these are filled by CiT’s from the previous summer.

  •

Q- Do I need to stay the whole summer?

  • Yes, staff members are hired for a period of time that includes pre-camp staff orientation and post camp clean up.  Staff members arrive before, and leave after, the campers.

  •

    Q- Do I get a day off?

  • Yes, staff members get a full day off each week except for the first week of each half session when they get an extra number of hours instead.

  •

    Q- Where do counselors live?

  • Almost all counselors live in cabins with a cabin group.  A small number of non-counseling staff have separate quarters but all staff should expect to live with campers.

  •

Q- When do I get paid?

  • Counselors get paid every two weeks.  Checks are handed out to each salaried staff member.  No direct deposit is offered.  There is a prepaid credit card option for those who come from far away.

  •

Q- How much do counselors get paid?

  • If you are doing it for the money you are in the wrong place buster.  Expect to make less than you would in another summer job and to have a great time doing it.  Rate of pay depends on a variety of things including but not limited to role, experience, and certifications.

  •

Q- Can I smoke at camp?

  • No.  Hawkeye is a smoke free and alcohol free campus.

  •

Q- Can my friends come and visit me at camp?

  • No, your friends can come and pick you up on your day off or meet you in town but Hawkeye is a small safe community and I am sure you understand that it would be difficult to justify to parents having visitors on whom we have little or no information and have not had background checks.

  •

Q- Can I have my cell phone at camp?

  • Of course you can…just not on your person or in your cabin.  There is an area in the staff cabin for each counselor to keep personal and electronic items.  No electronics of any kind are allowed in the cabins including but not limited to video game devices, cell phones, blow dryers, and hair straighteners.

  •

Q- Can my little brother/sister or cousin come to camp?

  • Of course; we would love to welcome a family member of yours to camp.  Some discounts for staff members’ families apply.

"I just wanted to thank you...for giving me the chance to be a part of Camp Hawkeye for another year. I really had the most fun I could of imagined those days I was there. The drive home was a sad one, especially leaving camp...So thank you sooooo much."
