IROQUOIS

 

     The tribe lived near Lake Ontario and along the Mohawk River in New York State. Originally "Haudenosaunee" or "people of the long house;" "Iroquois" is a French variant of "snake." Core beliefs included life as a struggle between the good and evil. Aggressive and responsible for the extermination of entire tribes. Social gatherings feature music and dance. The leader who finds lead dancers and singers, introduces them to the audience, and provides instructions. Dances are always counter-clockwise. Instruments include rattles, drums and other percussive instruments.
