MOHICANS
Pronounced "muh-HEE-can.” The word means "from the waters that are never
still;" the Mohican name for the Hudson River. They lived along the
banks of the Hudson River, in modern-day New York state and also in
parts of Massachusetts, and Connecticut. The tribe was ruled by sachems,
or chiefs. Mohican men were hunters and sometimes went to war to protect
their families. Mohican women were farmers and also did most of the
child care and cooking. They enjoyed storytelling, artwork and music.
