Program

Summer - Schedule &  Participation
Our program is based, at its core, as most traditional camps are, on an eight week stay.  We recognize however that family expectations and camper availability have both changed keeping eight week participation to a minimum composed of the lucky few who have the time.  The program is also cyclical so campers get a full experience over a four week stay as well.  The Hawkeye program is extremely active.  Campers are constantly engaged and expected to participate.  Active, however, does not mean sports based.  We do offer a range of competitive and individual sports but most of our active program focuses on participation in non-sports and non-traditional sports activities.

Session - Trips
The Hawkeye program is considered a trips-based program because of the emphasis on weekly out-of-camp wilderness adventure trips.  These trips are both age and ability appropriate and participation is by cabin or ability specific groups.  Most of these trips are day trips and the majority of those are hiking trips.  The Expeditions Program and our Trip Leaders take full advantage of the mountains and rivers of central and northern New Hampshire including but not limited to the Sandwich Range Wilderness and White Mountain National Forest.  Even the farthest trip is less than two hours drive from camp.  The trip experiences and the challenges contained therein are cumulative.  Skills learned in camp and practiced on earlier trips are expected to be parts of the longer trips that come later in the summer.

Weekly - "Special" Activities
From one camp to another the basic program structure varies widely around themes, expectations and the level of individual choice but many of the basic activities are the same.  Archery, arts & crafts, swimming, athletics, and boating are ubiquitous among New England camps.  One of the major factors in determining the unique nature of a program is its number and variety of Special Activities.  At Hawkeye the weekly schedule is made around our Special Activity Days.  Our Program Director spends most of his time planning these unique events and although some have similar names to some used in other camps they are skill-specific and team-based in a way that develops group and individual decision-making and leadership skills.  The Bumppo Stick, Nation's Games, Welly Wanging, The Tribal Contest, Treasure Hunt, and, of course, The Amazing Race cannot be missed!

Daily - A Combination of Schedule and Choice
We believe that young men and women have the capability and the disposition to make good and responsible decisions. Within our program campers have the responsibility to make numerous individual and group decisions that determine their daily schedule but also their weekly out of camp trip. On a daily basis the Hawkeye program is centered upon the cabin group. Cabin groups will attend activities together, have daily "cabin time" during which they may relax, plan a trip or work on a camp project together. The daily schedule also has time built into it for campers to branch out and spend time away from their cabin group during choice periods. These periods will vary on a daily basis as the weather permits, and the summer progresses.
