2007 Staff

Waterfront Coordinator: Kiera Fredericksen, Healthcare Professional, 25.  New York, USA.

More than a dozen years in camping and Kiera finds herself just where she wants to be...at Hawkeye.  She is a recycling professional; I am not kidding, she works in the paper recycling division of a major company.  However I think the technology has changed since I was in third grade and I doubt she is standing over a barrel filled with water dissolving paper and straining it with a screen.  Rough stock that would be.  Kiera will be coordinating and is responsible for supervising all swimming classes and free swim.  So, if you want to cool off during camp, do not cross this woman.

Chefy: Brendon Brophy, Chef 23 Years Old.  Watertown, MA, USA.

A camp rookie, Brendon has burst onto the scene garnering 25 "chefy's," an international record, in only two weeks of camp.  Other staff members are resentful of his early success...not because the food is great but because they can't stand that song.  Please help!   Not a big fan of tilapia or eggplant Brendon has redefined the Hawkeye chef role making all-time camper favorites like quesadillas, vegetable sticks, and spaghetti and meatballs.

Cabin Counselor: Jessica Solley, Marketing Professional,  22 Years Old.  Wantage, NJ, USA.

Completing a dual degree in Education and Business this spring in Boston, MA, Jess has no rival when it comes to magnetism and enthusiasm.  As a volunteer Drama and CKC  cabin counselor in '06 she got her first dose of Camp life and is, in her own words "Hooked for life."  As an athlete, volunteer, coach, tutor, and mentor, Jess has worked in a variety of situations with children of all ages.  Currently attending school full-time, working weekends, and volunteering for Jumpstart, an Americorps Program, Jess can't wait to return to Baptist Lake.

General Counselor: Norman Birenbaum, Student 20 Years Old.  Newton, MA, USA.

•     A former wrestler and student at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio.  Norman came and provided tremendous stability in both the Athletics Program Area and the youngest boys cabin with Ron.  Norman ran our wrestling area keeping the mats clean and the campers excited.  Wrestling quickly became a camp favorite as boys and girls alike learned the basics from this high school and college expert.  Norman may be best known for his wrestling prowess but brings a tremendous amount of patience and understanding to everything that he does...not to mention wit and a broad range of knowledge.  Any camper in his cabin should consider themselves lucky.

Cabin Counselor: Sean Clarke, Retail Professional 26 Years Old.  Ratoath, Meath, Ireland.

Irish and proud to be so!  Coming all the way from County Meath in the Republic of Ireland, Sean might as well have a soccer ball attached to his instep.  A player, coach, manager, and fan, he will be unlocking some of the secrets of "footy" for anyone interested.  Sean is excited about finishing his first summer at camp and bringing all of his newfound skills to bear in 2007.  Energetic, fun-loving, great sense of humor and curious, Sean wants to learn as much as he teaches.  He wants to "have as much fun as I can fit in to four weeks!"

Lifeguard: Anna Bresnick, Student U. of Vermont 19 Years Old.  Newton, MA, USA.

•     Anna is knee deep in her first year in Burlington, Vermont, as a Catamount (at the University of Vermont).  She will be patrolling the beach and docks in 2007down at the waterfront as an integral member of our swimming staff.  She is a diver and a freestyle specialist.  It is rumored that she can hold her breath for a full four minutes; but talk is cheap, as they say, and we'll believe it when we see it.

Archery Counselor: Nick Beatrice, Aspiring Actor 23 Years Old.  Newton, MA, USA.

•     Another former wrestler and student at University of Massachusetts, Nick will be playing the part of Robin Hood this summer.  No, the wealthy needn't watch their wallets but the bull's-eyes better watch their backs!  As our archery aficionado, Nick will have no equal; on the wrestling mat Alex might say that is a different story.  With ten brothers and sisters Nick comes from a family that he describes as "camp all year round."  No problem with the cabin living or the repeated "why?'s" from the younger members of our community.

Cabin Counselor: Alice Duket, Student Boston College 19 Years Old.  Newton, MA, USA.

•     Although she is not actually a mermaid, the speed with which she slices through the water, and her webbed toes, make it appear so.  Our resident butterfly ace, Alice can teach even a monkey how to swim.  I guess there is still no hope for Phil!  As a lifeguard and swim instructor Alice will impart her knowledge gained from thousands of laps and years of experience at numerous summer camps.  Don't worry, the fangs aren't real.

Cabin Counselor: Lesley Kettles, Teacher 25 Years Old.  Inverness, Scotland.

•     As a camp counselor since 2001, Lesley has repeatedly made the long arduous trip across the Atlantic...in a row boat.  No, that's not true, she flies each year...gee her arms must be tired!  Lesley is finishing up her first year of teaching and has already accepted an offer for a long-term position as a Business teacher at the secondary level in Stirling Scotland.

CiT Coordinator:  Sabrina Fanger, Student-Clark U. 23 Years Old. Newton, MA, USA.

After finishing her Junior year at Clark University in Worcester Sabrina is filling her time before camp in an internship and getting as many certifications as possible.  She just finished two additional certs to ad to her WFA; she did a ropes/adventure course instructor cert and a mediation cert.  Wow, she'll have to get a bigger apartment so that there is enough wall space for them all...perhaps just a bigger fridge.  Her internship is with a non-profit organization that works to bring city kids out into nature during the summer on hiking and biking trips and skiing in the winter.  Don't get too used to that chair Sabrina.

Trip Leader: Elise Carlson, Student-21 years old.  Florida, USA.

•    Along with her Wilderness First Aid certification and experience in many types of wilderness and adventure activities Elise is bringing a team spirit and leadership ethic that is highly regarded not only at Hawkeye but throughout the camp community.  Elise has experience in residential camping not just as a camper but as a staff member as well.  She will bring all of her skills to bear as a trip leader taking as many as three or four groups out on trips each week.  See if you can catch a glimpse of her on the trails and waterways of Central New Hampshire.

Lifeguard: Jen Dineen, Student-22 Years Old.  Groveland, Massachusetts.

A newcomer to the Hawkeye community Jen's arrival was eagerly awaited.  Her energy and enthusiasm preceded her and she fits in nicely with our returning female staff; firecrackers all of them.  She is veteran of countless pool hours and it is said you can still see the marks from the lifeguard chair on her back.  Jen has immeasurable experience coaching "kiddie soccer" and training our next generation of Olympians.

Cabin Counselor: John Crehan,  Engineer-21 Years Old.  County Meath, Ireland.

Another one?!  Alright!  Yes to everyone's delight we have added another good natured Irishman to our staff.  John comes highly recommended (by his cousin) and we are eager to see him demonstrate his many Hurling and Ping Pong skills at camp.  As a coach and athlete John has years of experience instructing children in various athletic endeavors.  Remember to give him a surprise when you meet him at camp and tell him "Failte Abhaile."

Cabin Counselor: Ron Smith, Teacher 24 Years Old.  Texas, USA.

•     Another camp veteran...just not Hawkeye.  Ron is a new teacher in Houston Texas working with students involved in the special education curriculum.  Considering his future as a teacher Ron has decided to come all the way to New Hampshire to share his dynamic personality and reassuring presence with one of our oldest boys cabins.

Nature Counselor: Kristen Burns, Teacher 27 Years Old.  Massachusetts, USA.

•     Kristen is so excited to come to camp that we had to have her watched so that she did not show up early.  A science teacher in Western Massachusetts she lives in the transplanted town of Northampton... not quite a neighbor to Skip and Neil I think they may be very distant cousins.  Originally recruited to work at Mungo's Hospital as a researcher, Kristen decided to work with us because luckily her visa was denied.

Cabin Counselor: Matt Freiman, Student 20 Years Old.  New York, USA.

•     A former camper of the Director's way back in ...200?...well nobody seems to be able to remember exactly when.  Freiman is another camp person who brings a wealth of experience and information to his job.  As a cabin counselor whichever boys group that gets lucky and has him as their counselor is truly fortunate.  A dollar for whichever camper can guess his nickname.

Volunteer Counselor: Daniel Ray "Junior" Montalvo , Soldier 20 Years Old.  New York, USA.

•     Our friendship with Junior began way back last century when he was…wait for it…a Camper!  Not at Hawkeye of course because our community is younger than most of my shoes but in another place that was truly the kernel from which camp popped.  Junior comes from “The City.”  Nobody knows to what city he is referring or where it might be located.  However, there is speculation that it is very close to Djibouti somewhere in the Horn of Africa.  Either that or at the corner of 41st and Broadway.  Junior has the mien and energy of some of the most famous counselors to ever roam the verdant woods of New England.  So, look for him hanging from rafters and running across the athletic field because, as everybody knows, he loves to be chased.

Nurse: DeAnn Kelsey, School Nurse.  Boston, USA.

•     DeAnn not only has many years of nursing experience but is bringing three surprises with her to Hawkeye this summer.  Can you guess what...who they are?  As a first time residential camp participant she will need help from all campers with "boo- boos" and "ouchies" to fully appreciate the community experience.  So, when you bump your toe, or scratch your arm, remember to share your own version of camp with those in the Health Center.

Chef: Brendon Brophy, Chef-23 years old.  Waltham, USA.

•     Hawkeye's own version of the Iron Chef, Brendon thankfully speaks English...and American.  Working at a popular fast-paced restaurant in a suburb of Boston has prepared our new chef perfectly for the full experience of camp and meal times.  Brendon will facilitate the coming together of all community members more consistently than anyone else at camp.  Healthy kid-friendly food is on the menu so don't worry, no eggplant...at least not every day.

Athletics Counselor: Javier Padilla, Student-25 years old.  Madrid, Spain.

•     Javier replaces a mainstay at camp and will have to try and take up the mantle of one of our most memorable characters from last summer; the Oracle.  He has the hat but does he have the focus that such a part demands?  I am sure he does.  A student, coach, and multi-year veteran of sports camp in Madrid Javier already knows something about the community and friendships that develop at camp.  Perhaps he can even teach us something about soccer?  Most likely a good amount of volleyball too.

Drama Counselor: Alison Clinton, Teacher-29 years old.  Northampton, England.

•    Alison is another teacher during the off-season (i.e. when camp is not in session).  She is versatile and teaches dance and theater in her current position.  If you think you loved drama before now we'll be hard pressed to get you out of the theater.  Good; we need campfire entertainment.  Dance monkey!  Just kidding, you can sing too.

Arts & Crafts Counselor: Talya Washington, City Year Volunteer-19 years old.  New Jersey, USA.

•    After a year working in special education as a part of the City Year program in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Talya cannot wait for camp to start.  Never having done residential camp before she is excited about sharing her artistic talents but even more eager to meet campers and counselors from across the country and around the world.  Hopefully this summer will be her first of many as she enters college in the fall.

General Counselor: Kyle Brown, Firefighter-24 years old.  Arizona, USA.

•    An Arizonian in heart and spirit Kyle is only more comfortable in one other place than camp...in the water.  A swimmer, jet-ski racer, and boat enthusiast, Kyle spends his time at camp "messing about in boats."  Camp is acting as the first leg of a round the world trip for our boy who leaves for Europe as soon as camp finishes.  So, if you are on a trip keep an eye out for anyone who looks disturbingly like Wolverine.

General Counselor: Cal Colgan, Student-19 years old.  Florida, USA.

•    A transplant to Florida from the great state of Delaware.  A first year college student Cal has participated in more than his share of long distance wilderness trips including multi-day hikes and week long canoe excursions.  No stranger to sleeping outside Cal will be helping out with a Cabin, co-leading out-of-camp trips and at a variety of Program Areas.

General Counselor: Mike Fedyk, Paint Professional-28 years old.  Northampton, England.

•    Mike is new to camping and this summer will be his first visit to this vast country. Growing up in Liverpool, Mike developed a grand appreciation for nature and the outdoors.  He is looking forward to the community experience and his first extended work with youth.

Cabin Counselor: Mariel Fredericksen, Teacher-18 years old.  New York, USA.

•    Another camp lover with more than a decade of camping behind her.  Hopefully she has another decade ahead of her.   A recent graduate Mariel is looking forward to her first year at Dickinson University in the fall almost as much as her time at Hawkeye.  As a consultant last summer Mariel shared her knowledge of the Chinese language, culture, and food with us.  Yum.  You can bet that we'll see those dumplings again.

General Counselor: Firas Al-Hamed, Student-17 years old.  Northampton, England.

•    Another recent graduate Firas comes to New Hampshire in search of answers to life's great questions.  What are we doing here? (camp) & Where are we going? (camp).  An athlete and soccer maven Firas will bring his boots and his costume as he will be helping out in both Athletics and Drama.  We see Firas as another example of a Hawkeye "renaissance man."

General Counselor: Kristin Henrich, Student.  East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, USA.

•    A late edition to camp Kristin has many years of experience at camp.  She just told me this evening that we should have camp all summer next year...already done... and then added "How about all year?!"  Now you're thinking.  Kristin is a life saver and joined our team on a moment's notice when we needed her most.  In addition to her responsibilities with Cabin 2 she also doubles as a Nature and Arts & Crafts counselor.
