What we value most in prospective staff is who you are, not what you know. Staff who succeed at Hawkeye have a positive attitude, have a willingness to learn, and are willing to be "in it" with us.
You don't need extensive work in childcare or youth development to join our team (though it's great if you do have that!). We can teach you how to work with kids. For us, it's your desire to make a difference that matters most. If you're committed to the mission, and you're willing to work hard and have fun in the process, we only have one question for you: what are you waiting for?
DIVERSITY IS RIGHT THERE IN OUR MISSION
It's a priority for us that our staff feel seen, valued and respected for exactly who they are.
Let's be honest for a moment - we know it can be hard to find a camp to work at that reflects the diversity we wish was there. That's one big reason that we created Hawkeye to be different. We recruit staff outside of the traditional groups that already participate in overnight camping. And, because our campers grow up and become camp staff, our community diversity fuels itself.
It is gratifying to see the explosion of "diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)" policies being added to websites and to programs across the camp industry. A just and diverse world takes effort and needs many champions. But you won't find a DEI policy or page on our website because we've been doing DEI since day one. It is literally the first descriptive word in our mission. It's built in to everything we do at camp and it's our people, not a policy, that makes Hawkeye celebrated for the diverse, welcoming, affirming and open community that it is.
